The first step to making a rabbit cage cosy and suitable for your pet to stay in is to line it with sufficient bedding. This is especially important as thick bedding is required to prevent your pet from getting sore hocks; the heavier your rabbit is, the thicker the bedding should be. An average sized rabbit should require approximately 4 inches of bedding, with common materials being recycled paper, pulp fibres and hay.
Be sure to check the bedding frequently for spots of pee and leftover food and replace those parts of the bedding to prevent your pet from ingesting them. It is also important to replace the entire bedding at least once a week. Ideally, you should be looking at beddings that are dust-free, easy to clean, has great odour control and is safe for rabbits to chew, as some materials can cause gastrointestinal tract issues. No matter what type of bedding you choose, just ensure that your pet’s health and safety are being taken care of.
