Cat litter trays and boxes are necessary for your pet to relieve himself hygienically. In order to get the right litter box for your cat, ensure that the box is of a comfortable size and height for your pet. Your cat should at least be able to turn around in the box easily and the height is dependent on how big and old your cat is. Typically, older cats and kittens will not be able to climb over tall litter boxes.
Another tip is to purchase an extra box of a different design to test out which one your cat likes better. Also, be sure to fill the box with an appropriate amount of cat litter as too much or too little will deter your cat from going into the box. A study found that most cats have no strong preference between open and closed litter boxes, though a few may favour one type. The key is to ensure the box is spacious and that the litter is changed regularly to keep it clean.
For a clumping cat litter, it is recommended to scoop out the box daily, and replace the litter about once every month. For a non-clumping cat litter, more frequent change is advised – around twice a week.
However if the litter starts to smell, it’s time for a change regardless of the schedule.
Avoid placing your cat’s litter box near their food and water dishes. Cats prefer their litter boxes to be placed in peaceful, low traffic areas that are easily accessible.
